[Writing Prompt] An exciting rendition of an unimportant math exam.

An Exciting Retelling Of A Math Test

Timmy sat down at his desk, his heart racing, hands sweating as they always did before an exam. He took out his small nylon bag with the worn figure of Spiderman drawn on the side, and unzipped it anxiously, unleashing the acrid ash smell of countless pencil shavings.

As Ms. Hendricks passed out the exams and their accompanying scan-trons, Timmy reached into his pencil bag like it was a sack of holding, and pulled out a tattered, chewed on pencil and sharpener.

As the scan-tron landed on Timmy’s desk, and the exam, upside down and shut, its terrible, inscrutable mathematical secrets hidden, fell alongside it, Timmy took out his well worn sharpener, his ageless companion in battle, and sharpened his leaden weapon to a fine point.

Mrs. Hendricks arrived in front of the class, her hands frighteningly empty, the potential for academic calamity now spread across the desks of the room, a small part of that potential now awaiting Timmy himself, monstrous and terrible, right in front of him.

“Class, this is a closed book test. You must not consult your notes. You will have 60 minutes…starting…” Mrs. Hendricks consulted the clock on the wall, as though it were a co-conspirator in her torturous scheme, “…now.”

Timmy heard the flush of papers being upturned on the desks surrounding him, the eagerness of well studied students seeking a test they felt confident in being able to ace.

But Timmy knew himself, knew his strengths and his many weaknesses, and knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that he was going to fail this algebra test. Even multiple choice algebra would not abide him – it never had before.

Fear enrapturing his heart, Timmy turned the test over and perused its first, inscrutable question. Terror manifested all at once – that awful sensation of knowing you are so completely unprepared for a test that it might as well be in another language – that fucking horrible feeling we all know from years of schooling, washed over Timmy like a tidal wave of psychic shrapnel.

Fuck tests.
